During year one of this program students will be given a basic understanding of shop safety.  Students will be introduced to hand and power tools with instructional focus on safe operation. Students will begin to build their knowledge of measurements and shop related math. Our typical projects include  a footstool, medicine cabinet, end table, Adirondack chair, and picnic table.

During year two of this program students will further develop the skills learned in year one. Students will continue to work on construction math and measurements. They will be introduced to basic framing such as floor systems, wall systems, roof systems and some siding techniques. Students will be introduced to stair framing and stair finish. Students will be introduced to some interior and exterior finish work such as casing, crown molding, baseboard and small cabinet building. They will also be introduced to painting techniques for basic carpentry. During this year students will earn their OSHA 10 certification as well.

During year three of this program students will continue to work on some of the technology components associated with this industry. Students will continue to learn about the industry. Students will continue to develop skills needed to become  successful in a career that sustains them for life. They will continue to improve their skills by continued  experiences. Students will build a shed elevated on a platform so that they can experience working on staging and ladders. Students will then use painting techniques on the sheds while gaining more experience using staging and ladders. They will  also learn how to cut stringers for stairs as well as the finish work. They will install doors and windows with all associated finish work. We will discuss what it takes to complete a house. At this level students will get an opportunity to experience authentic work outside the school in the community. Students will also complete a research project in preparation for their senior capstone project. Students will get ready to participate in a  CO-OP work program if eligible.

During year 4 of this program students will use the skills from previous years to finish their high school career. They will continue to work outside the shop in the community on  authentic work: repair, restoration, and new construction of structures in Boston. Students will participate in a  CO-OP work program if eligible .  Students will complete a work readiness curriculum to help prepare them for graduation.  This includes resume building, interview skills as well as team building skills.  Students will complete their senior project (Capstone) as a culmination of their education in this field.  Students will also earn a CPR and HotWorks Certification.
