Exploratory

Overview

The Freshman Exploratory is a structured program designed to help incoming high school students explore various vocational paths before committing to one for the rest of their high school career. Students get to explore each of the 20 programs, where they experience hands-on activities, observe demonstrations, and learn the skills that are necessary for careers in the many career areas offered at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School.

Steps in the Exploratory Process

  1. Exploration of Vocational Programs: During their freshman year, students will have the opportunity to explore 20 different vocational programs. The academic schedule is divided into two types of weeks:
    • A Week: Students attend their regular academic classes.
    • B Week: Students rotate through the different vocational programs, gaining hands-on experience in each.

  2. Selection of Preferred Programs: After experiencing all the vocational options, students will select three programs that they are most interested in. The decision on which programs students can pursue is based on a combination of their:
    • Grades: How well they perform academically
    • Attendance: How consistently they show up to both academic and vocational sessions
    • Participation: How engaged and active they are during the vocational program rotations

These factors help determine whether students are able to get into their top choice vocational program.

  3. Commitment to a Program: Once students are placed in a vocational program based on their selections and qualifications, they are enrolled in that program until graduation. This means they will continue to receive specialized training and education in their chosen vocational field throughout the remainder of their high school years.
