Special Education

Department Overview

The Special Education department’s mission is to provide our diverse student body with the opportunity to acquire an integrated career and academic education. Individualized instruction, applied learning and work site experience prepare all students to succeed in technologically advanced careers, as well as post-secondary education. Students who meet all graduation requirements may receive both a BPS Diploma and a Certificate of Competency in their technical program.

In alignment with that vision, the Special Education Team will collaboratively provide support to all students with disabilities to best access the variety of curricula, and provide access points to these curricula through the use of specialized instruction, services and supports. The Madison Park Special Education Team strives to provide equal access to all students so that they may receive a Free and Appropriate Public Education in the Least Restrictive Environment possible for each individual student to achieve success.

If you have any questions, please contact the Director of Special Education Dr. Stephen Centerrino at scenterrino@bostonpublicschools.org.

Programming

Federal law guarantees every student the right to a free and appropriate public education regardless of handicap or disability. State law (CMR 28) further guarantees the right to an education in the “least restrictive environment.” That means in typical classroom settings with students without disabilities.

  • Madison Park offers Resource/Learning Center services. These programs provide specialized instruction to between 12 and 16 students in an instructional period.
  • Madison Park offers services in a substantially separate setting. These programs provide specialized instruction to between 8 and 12 students in an instructional setting.
  • Madison Park offers services to students with significant disabilities. These programs range in enrollment from 8 to 12 students.

OSDC Program

The Occupational Social Development Skills Center (OSDC) and Transition Programs at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School is to prepare students for the “world of work.” The goal of this program is to provide educational services for students in their least restrictive environment. Students in this program range in age from 14 to 22. Each student is held to the expectation that they will demonstrate progress toward their individual education goals; further develop their academic skills in all areas; and acquire independent living skills that will allow them to functionally apply these skills.

As members of the Special Education team, OSDC builds social skills and personal independence to strengthen our student’s capacity to adjust to the real world after leaving school. The core teachings of this program revolve around life skills inclusive of: building self-confidence, self-sufficiency, motivation, and resilience. The academic courses that students take are functional in nature, and serve as the conduit to help students succeed in the workplace and become productive, independent, and socially competent adults.
