MyCap

Your Career and Academic Plan

MyCAP is your multi-year college and career planning process. You own it.

MyCAP is neither a website nor a final plan written on paper. It’s a part of your 4-year high school journey.

Why should I care about my Career and Academic Plan?  You should care because it is the best way to get what you need from high school to have a great future.  MyCAP will help you focus on the steps you need to take to get where you want to go.  It’s about making choices that are best for you.

What is MyCap going to do for my future?  You will use the MyCAP process to figure out the future you want and how to get it so you can make a great living while following your dreams.  It helps you to take charge of your student life right now at Madison Park, so your time here is spent with purpose.

What does it look like?  It’s like a tree. There are roots (core fundamental skills you develop), a trunk (your true self), large branches (big choices you make to decide your path), and many smaller branches and leaves (many additional activities and experiences that help you succeed).  Your MyCAP will grow all through high school and beyond.

At Madison Park, you take control of your journey through high school and beyond with MyCAP.

Madison Park is a great place to work on MyCAP because you are already building your skills and career through vocational choice.  But MyCAP is much more than just the vocational program you select.

Through the MyCAP process, you can gain knowledge, skills, and experiences in three important domains:

  • The personal domain:  Who am I? What do I love to do? What are my skills and talents?
  • Career development:  What career opportunities are a good match for me? How do I take advantage of my vocational program?
  • College, career, and academic planning:  What are the academic fundamentals that I need, and how do I get them? What further education is best for me?

MyCAP online:  Students also need a place to organize their planning efforts.  Here at Madison Park and across the district, we use Naviance as the platform for MyCAP.  Naviance offers a range of activities and experiences that help students learn about and prepare for careers and colleges.

Naviance is not the same as MyCAP, but Naviance plays an important role in support of MyCAP.

What else can you do to work on yours?

Students are encouraged to tackle MyCAP on their own and pursue experiences in addition to what is offered by school staff.  There are many ways for students to take ownership of their Career and Academic Plans.

Start with the Naviance experiences that the school provides.  But go beyond that.  Here are some things you can do:

  • Plan to participate in the school’s co-op program
  • interview family and friends about careers
  • find interesting businesses and organizations and go visit them
  • do independent research online about careers
  • take an online course to get a credential that will help with a career
  • ask an adult to review your resume and make suggestions
  • get a part-time job in an area of interest
  • make sure to understand which academic subjects are needed in occupations that look interesting and master them, especially literacy and numeracy.
